The coronavirus pandemic and the shift to distance learning in schools have shown that it is difficult to do without a computer these days. However, it is worth choosing equipment so that it meets all safety requirements and at the same time allows the student to take advantage of all the benefits of technology. What should be taken into account when choosing a computer for a child?

What for a student: a laptop or a desktop?

Both solutions have their advantages and disadvantages, but in case of choosing a computer for a child you should pay special attention to this issue. As a rule, children do not need equipment which can be easily moved from place to place. A mobile laptop is more suitable for older pupils or students; for younger children it is better to provide access to a desktop computer. This will not only make it easier to take care of the equipment - the computer will not be moved, which minimizes the risk of mechanical damage - but it will also help to control the time the child spends in front of the screen. Desktop computers are also a kind of investment for the future. Technical capabilities of laptops are unfortunately limited, in this regard a desktop computer will prove to be much better. This is because an outdated equipment can be expanded or replaced with specific components and in this way the computer can be upgraded in accordance with the technological progress.

Computer for learning or... games?

If used well, technology can not only facilitate learning but also provide entertainment. Children are especially eager to take advantage of this - in their free time, of course, and moreover with age-appropriate games. It is therefore worth paying attention to the parameters of the chosen computer, so that it meets the technical requirements of popular games. We would like to remind those who are not convinced that video games can also have an educational function. Computer games strongly stimulate the brain, teach decision-making and logical thinking, and develop reflexes, spatial imagination, communication and interpersonal skills. It is only important that a parent knows how to suggest to the child those games which will really influence the child's skills - useful both at school and in everyday life.

Computer for a child: cheap or efficient?

On the wide market of electronic devices it is fortunately easy to find a compromise between price and equipment efficiency. After all, a computer intended for a child doesn't have to have a specialized graphic card or the most powerful processor. You will easily find efficient equipment at an optimal price level. Just remember that a computer is not everything. In order to learn or play, you will also need a proper monitor (preferably with blue light reduction technology, which will protect your child's eyes), a mouse and a keyboard sized for the youngest hands, as well as - depending on the needs - a printer, speakers or other devices.
